mathematics

student art, the number 9
Every day begins with exercises in oral math: word and logic problems interwoven with stories, and arithmetic drills without pen and paper. During this dynamic thinking session, we stress quickness and intense concentration. Because morning math takes place during circle, children of all ages have the opportunity to respond and learn from each other. After circle, students continue to work on their regular math curriculum using the current textbook, computer software (after third grade), manipulatives, or any teacher-invented materials or projects.

Arriving at the correct solution to the problem is the goal of course, but conceptual reasoning and creative thinking are equally important. We encourage perseverance when solutions are not immediate and nudge those students along for whom math may be difficult. As the complexity of students' mathematics abilities increases, so will the variety of experiential learning projects and lessons to students. Our goal is for students of all abilities to master the basic skills in mathematics while sparking a curiosity for advanced mathematical thinking. Because our curriculum is not age based, we make adjustments for students who may need more challenging material.
