Science at Anneliese's is a popular subject. Why? Because students have
the opportunity to work with exciting, hands-on science manipulatives
and because they are exposed to challenging scientific principles at an
age when science comes naturally and their curiosity is limitless. Science
is taught as a whole, not in a fragmented, over-simiplified way. For example,
concepts in chemistry are taught as early as second grade and then revisited
again and again each year until the students understand the "whole" picture. Science
has a vocabulary and language, just like English, art, history, and yet
"real" science isn't taught until secondary education when students haven't
had the opportunity to develop the language of science in their formative
years. We want to tap into the child's natural gift of science and expose
them to as much as possible. We offer field study projects where students
apply what they learn in the classroom to their environment. Students
explore environmental issues such as garbage, pollution, ecological disasters,
water, air and soil with an emphasis on integrating mathematics into their
studies. We want students to use their knowledge of science and math in
a way that relates to their world. |
